Affective Colormap Design for Accurate Visual Comprehension in Industrial Tomography

Abstract: The design of colormaps can help tomography operators obtain accurate visual comprehension, thereby assisting safety-critical decisions. The research presented here is about deploying colormaps that promote the best affective responses for industrial microwave tomography (MWT). To answer the two research questions related to our study, we firstly conducted a quantitative analysis of 11 frequently-used colormaps on a segmentation task. Secondly, we presented the same colormaps within a crowdsourced study compri… Show more

“…The ERT-reconstructed RGB true-color images were extracted into the three separate images and displayed in these panels using the MATLAB function imsplit. The extracted channels have been mapped to six different MATLAB colormaps; copper, hot, summer, autumn, winter, and spring [27]. These six colormap images are simultaneously displayed in six panels in the "R-Channel", G-Channel, and "B-Channel" tabs.…”

“…Finally, the importance of advanced visualization for fast industrial tomographic processes to analyze objects under consideration has increased to a significant extent [27,28]. Therefore, there is a need to develop comprehensive and easy-to-use graphical-user-interface-based software with functionality of data acquisition, image reconstruction, image segmentation, and solid concentration distribution visualization.…”

“…The achieved disentanglement of perceptual lightness from hue facilitates the development of more efficient image-processing algorithms and graphical interfaces (Burns and Shepp, 1988 ; Chen et al, 2007 ). Together with a proper account for color semantics, this allows, e.g., the construction of better color maps for various domains of data analysis (Borland and Taylor Ii, 2007 ; Wang et al, 2008 ; Larrea et al, 2010 ; Zhou and Hansen, 2016 ; Bujack et al, 2018 ; Schloss et al, 2019 ; Reda and Szafir, 2021 ; Zhang et al, 2021 ). When restricted to a single dimension, however, the standard color circle is arguably the most illustrative scheme of pure chromatic colors (McCamy, 1993 ).…”

“…Hence it is indispensable to implement the ERT sensor which can provide the resolution within the conductivity range of the given crystallization process. Finally, the importance of advanced visualization in modern times for the fast industrial tomographic processes to analyze the objects under consideration has increased to a significant extent [28,29]. Therefore there was a need to develop a comprehensive and easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) based software with the functionality of data acquisition, image reconstruction, image segmentation, and crystal agglomerate visualization.…”
