Background and aims Plant productivity in drylands is frequently co-limited by water and nutrient availability, and thus is expected to be influenced by ongoing changes in rainfall regime and atmospheric nutrient deposition. Roadside grasslands are widespread worldwide, represent ecologically meaningful examples of highly dynamic anthropogenic ecosystems, and are well suited to investigate global change effects on plant performance. We evaluated the effects of changes in water and nutrient availability on the relative dominance and physiological performance of Bromus rubens, Carduus tenuifolius and Melilotus officinalis, which belong to contrasting functional groups (grasses, non-legume forbs and legumes, respectively). Methods We conducted a factorial field experiment in two semiarid roadside grasslands in central Spain with the following factors: watering (no water addition vs. watering with 50% of the monthly total precipitation median) and fertilization (no fertilization vs. addition of 80 kg Nha −1 year −1 ). The cover of the species evaluated, was surveyed over a 2-year period. Plant isotopic composition (leaf δ 13 C and δ 18 O) and nutrient concentrations (foliar N, P and K) were used to assess plant ecophysiological performance. Results Carduus was able to cope with lower water availability levels through stomatal adjustments without a significant reduction in its relative dominance. The relative dominance of Bromus was negatively affected by even moderate water stress, although elevated nutrient deposition buffered the adverse impact of drought through a nutrient-mediated enhancement of plant water use efficiency. Increased nutrient availability strongly decreased the relative dominance of Melilotus, irrespective of water availability. Conclusions Species-specific physiological mechanisms of adjustment to treatments suggest that plant communities in roadside grasslands will not respond as a unit to global environmental change. In the 20th century, in the Mediterranean area, many extensive afforestation efforts were made with the primary objective of protecting soils from erosion and improving their fertility. This study evaluates the effects of the afforestation undertaken in the Guadalentín basin (SE Spain) with respect to the organic and inorganic soil constituents and physico-chemical soil properties. Given the phytoclimatic environments in the basin (sclerophyllous and hyperxerophyllous), paired samples were taken beneath the tree canopy of the pine plantations and in nearby open zones. With the same methodology, samples were taken from areas considered to be native forest. The data were submitted to different multivariate analyses of variance (two-way MANOVAs) in order to compare the effects and interactions of the factors CANOPY (with and without trees), PHYTOCLIMATE (sclerophyllous and hyperxerophyllous), and TYPE OF FOREST (afforested or native) on the dependent variables measured (soil variables). Significant differences were found at 0-10 cm in soil depth under pine afforestations in relation to adjacent open areas. Below this depth, differences were found only between phytoclimatic environments. No significant interactions were found between the variables analysed at any of the depths, indicating that the effects of the afforestations on the soil characteristics were independent of the phytoclimatic environment. The afforestation in the Guadalentín basin, in the two phytoclimatic environments considered increased the soil fertility. Nevertheless, the native forests presented the highest soil organic-carbon contents, mainly in the sclerophyllous phytoclimate type (Quercus ilex subsp. ballota forests). Therefore, although the afforestations improved the soil fertility in relation to the open areas, the maximum potential has probably not been reached in relation to that observed in the native forests. The effects that forest development (age, basal area) over time exerts on soil properties remain to be verified by further research.

The main goal of this 19 study was to evaluate the effect of thinning in the short and medium term on tree growth, 20 climate (drought) sensitivity, WUE performed using growth and sap flow measurements and 21WUEi performed using δ increased growth, but also changed the tree growth-precipitation relationships, with C trees 27 depending more on precipitation than thinned trees did. WUEi after thinning was significantly 28 affected only in the medium term, with C trees being more efficient (94.4 μmolCO2/molH2O) 29 than H98 trees (88.7), especially in dry spells (100.7). WUEi was found to increase when 30 precipitation decreased, regardless of the treatment. However, WUE increased sharply from C 31 was not consistent with our experimental data. Thus, the question of whether stable isotopes 37 can be used as a tool for addressing the ecophysiological impacts of thinning remains open. 38
