Non-destructive modeling using a drilling resistance tool to predict wood basic density of standing trees in a eucalypts plantation in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 6218-6226. Eucalypts are globally selected as the main tree species for pulp and paper industries owing to their good potential growth and wood traits. Wood basic density, which is related to wood biomass yield, is one of the most important wood traits for pulp production and has become a focus in the tree improvement program. Evaluation of this trait in the field is needed to efficiently develop tree improvement programs. The aims of this study were to determine the distribution of basic density in the vertical direction of standing trees, including Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus urophylla, and E. grandis × E. urophylla hybrid (commonly called “urograndis”), and to develop a model for predicting wood basic density using micro-drilling resistance tools of ResistographÒ. The results showed that basic density traits varied within individual trees and within and between species. Average whole tree basic wood densities of 379.9 kg/m3, 400.5 kg/m3, and 440.6 kg/m3 were found for E. grandis, hybrid urograndis, and E. urophylla at 44 months old, respectively. The model developed had a good correlation for predicting wood basic density at 1.3 m height and whole tree basic density, with the R2 for model calibration ranging from 0.52 to 0.76 for 1.3 m wood basic density prediction and from 0.62 to 0.79 for whole tree wood basic density. This study found that the three species of eucalyptus could be used to create a combined model for predicting wood basic density that could be used for each individual species. The model for single and multiple species had a good validation with R2 from 0.51 to 0.72.

Analysis of a tree ring is the primary method for determining the growth and age of a tree. In a microdestructive tree-ring measurement system, the tree under test is drilled with a microdrill at a constant rotating speed to detect the difference in density between the early and late wood, thereby realizing a microdestructive measurement of the tree-ring. The measurement system comprises a microdrill with a diameter of 3 mm, mechanical transmission, direct current (DC) servomotor, stepper motor, and control and detection circuit. The DC servomotor and stepper motor realize rotation and translation of the microdrill, respectively, through mechanical transmission. When the microdrill rotates and drills into the tree, the control and detection circuit samples and acquires the armature current of the DC servomotor, which is proportional to the resistance encountered by the drill bit and reflects the change in the density of the tree. The tree-ring number can be obtained by filtering the sampled original signals of the armature current using a finite impulse response (FIR) filtering algorithm. The annual rings of larch and fir tree discs were measured and tested using the designed system. It was observed that the average annual ring measurement accuracy of the larch discs reached 95.28%, while that of the fir discs was 84.16%. The diameter of the drill hole in the trunk was less than 3 mm after measuring the living wood, thereby achieving a microdestructive measurement of the tree-ring.

To improve the measurement accuracy of wood density and study the linear correlation between the drill feed resistance and wood density, a new micro drill instrument that can can simultaneously measure the rotation resistance and feed resistance of the drill needle was designed. The test wood samples included hardwood, softwood and conifer. The absolute dry density of each wood sample was measured. The drill resistance data was tested by using self-developed micro drill instrument and Resistogaph 650-SC. 4 linear models between drill resistance and the absolute dry density of wood . The results showed that: the statistical indicators of each model of the self-made micro drill resistance in-strument were better than the corresponding indicators of Resistogaph 650-SC; the coefficient of determination of the linear regression model between the feed resistance of the self-made micro drill resistance instrument and the absolute dry density of wood was 0.946; the statistical indicators of model including rotation resistance and feed resistance, were better than those of the model only including rotation resistance. Therefor, the design proposed in the article is reasonable, and increasing the feed resistance can improve the measurement accuracy of the micro drill resistance instrument for measuring wood density.
