Age‐Related Changes in Bone‐Strength‐Associated Geometry Indices in Naive Human Population

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate age-and sex-related changes in the geometry parameters (metacarpal cortical index (MCI) and Breaking Bending Resistance Index [BBRI]) of long hand bones in a large Chuvashian cohort using cross-sectional and longitudinal study designs. The data were gathered in 1994 (557 individuals) and 2002 (513 individuals). The latter sample included 260 individuals who were studied only during the second expedition, and 253 individuals who were previously investigated in 1994. … Show more

“…[9,10] All our study subjects were found to be obese showing increased BMI with increased age in a linear relationship; which agrees with previous studies. [11,12,13] The economic growth of the Gulf region has resulted in increases in dietary health problems and related diseases especially obesity in Asian women.…”

“…Thus, two complex phenotypes were produced: (1) mean BMD and (2) mean BBRI. Both phenotypes subsequently were adjusted for age and according to sex as described in detail previously (Kalichman et al 2008;Livshits et al 2002).…”

“…BBRI is one of the geometrical indices that can be used to assess the crosssectional moment of inertia in long bones (e.g., Kaptoge et al 2008;Livshits et al 2003). This procedure was reported in detail elsewhere (Kalichman et al 2008). From the obtained digital gray-scale images (1,200 £ 1,800 pixels with a resolution of 150 DPI) several measurements of bone size were taken.…”

“…Esta reação do osso pode ser justificada, além da hipótese de ser um mecanismo de compensação para continuar a responder ao stress mecânico exercido no esqueleto, pelo facto de o estrogénio ser um inibidor da formação óssea no periósteo (Gosman et al, 2011). Contudo, importa salientar que, mesmo com a aposição periosteal no sexo feminino, a perda de osso cortical é bastante mais rápida do que no sexo masculino (Kalichman et al, 2008).…”
