“…Consistent with prior studies using various imaging modalities,( Chen et al., 2011 ; Leidhin et al., 2021 ; Liu et al., 2012 ; Lu et al., 2011 ; Parkes et al., 2004 ; Selim et al., 2008 ; Wolters et al., 2017 ; Zhang et al., 2018 ) in the present study an age-related decrease in CBF GM was found for all models. Direct comparison between the present work and previous studies is limited due to significant differences in methodologies.…”

“…Sex differences were observed in most models (with the exception of the multivariable continuous WHR model (model 2.b)); this is not unexpected and is in line with previous studies where it was likewise found that global CBF was increased in women. ( Leidhin et al., 2021 ; Liu et al., 2012 ; Zhang et al., 2018 ) Indeed, in a recent study reporting normative CBF GM values stratified by sex, not only were women found to have higher CBF GM overall on average, as reported herein, but also a slower decline in CBF GM between the ages of 54 and 84 years. ( Leidhin et al., 2021 ) Additionally, normative brain volume values from the Framingham Heart study reported sex differences in brain volumes, with women having modestly larger total brain and frontal lobe volumes (normalized to head size) across all age groups investigated, as well as larger volumes of white matter hyperintensities.…”

“…A recent longitudinal study of 468 older people reported average CBF across the age range 50-90 [37]. The average GM CBF at age 69 is reported as 38.2 ml/min/100g for women and 34.8 ml/ min/100g for men [37], both of which are comparable with our values (37.4 ml/min/100g for women, 31.5 ml/min/100g for men, Table 2).…”

“…Our study also has potential limitations, for example in the individuation of outliers in the distribution of single trial mistakes across all participants. Many studies [ 73 , 74 ] prefer to remove outliers present in a distribution, because this is not considered to be a good representation of the sample population. However, our analyses demonstrated that, although the subset of participants individuated by the new threshold was relatively small compared to the entire sample, it could serve for the prediction of mobility decline with a good statistical power, and even better than traditional global parameters usually used to characterize the mistakes in SART performances.…”
