Age-Specific Life Table Parameters and Survivorship of an Iranian Population of the Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) at Different Constant Temperatures

Abstract: Age-specific life table parameters and survivorship, adult longevity, reproduction periods, fertility, and sex ratio of the codling moth were studied at eight constant temperatures (10, 14, 20, 25, 27, 30, 33, and 35 ±0.5°C). Among the examined temperatures, the highest values of net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase, and finite rate of increase were 18.28 (females/female), 0.08 (females/female/d), and 1.08 at 27°C, respectively. Similarly, the highest value of sex ratio was 0.56 [females/ (females… Show more

“…As the sex ratio of codling moth is 1:1, absolute density of female codling moth equals that of male codling moth. The mean number of eggs produced and laid by codling moth females varies slightly with temperature ( Agndam et al 2009 ) but can be safely estimated at 50 ( Geier 1963 and references therein). However, only about 33% of eggs laid in the field produce larvae that successfully attack apples ( Geier 1963 ).…”

“…Survival pattern was accessed by the curves that describe the age-specific survivorship ( l x ) with days of the adults after exposed heat shock [33]. The effects of heat-shock treatments on longevity, reproductive parameters in parent adults, and fitness parameters in F 1 progeny were tested by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and means were compared using Tukey's test ( P <0.05).…”

“…For C. pomonella Aghdam et al. () reported the highest net reproductive rate at 27 °C. Again, the lower temperature optimum of G. lobarzewskii is consistent with its preference for the cooler pre‐alpine areas (Sauter & Wildbolz, ).…”
