Aggrecan, versican and type VI collagen are components of annular translamellar crossbridges in the intervertebral disc

Abstract: The aim of this study was to undertake a detailed analysis of the structure of the inter and intralamellar regions of the annulus fibrosus. A total of 30 newborn to 6 year-old lumbar ovine intervertebral discs (IVDs) were fixed and decalcified en-bloc to avoid differential swelling artifacts during processing and vertical midsagittal, and horizontal 4 lm sections were cut. These were stained with toluidine blue to visualise anionic proteoglycan (PG) species, H & E for cellular morphology and picrosirius red (v… Show more

“…The existence of trans-lamellar 'cross-bridges' in the anulus, and their chemical composition, has been described [40,57,73,74]. Observed in both the transverse and sagittal planes, these structures appear to form connections between collagen bundles in non-consecutive lamellae.…”

“…Therefore, early diagnosis of disc degeneration is critical for the success of any modality of treatment strategy. 8,9 The etiologic factors of nocioceptive and disability caused by pathological disc is still currently debatable. 2,10 A common belief is that changes the diffusion of water will result in structural changes in nucleus pulposus, annulus and end plate that are altered the internal disc stability.…”
