Aggregation, carbon, and total soil nitrogen in crop-livestock-forest integration in the Eastern Amazon

Abstract: Sustainable agricultural production systems can improve physical attributes of soil as well as increase carbon and nitrogen stocks in soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in the stability of soil aggregates and contents and stocks of carbon and nitrogen after the conversion of native forest to crop-livestock-forest integration systems in the region of Western Pará. Soil samples from five management systems (including a control) were collected at three depths in a randomized block design, … Show more

“…Thus, a decline in SOC potentiates soil degradation affecting food, water, and climate security. This reinforces the need to monitor SOC stocks, mainly on a regional and local scale (Fernandes et al, 2018;Silva et al, 2018), obtained by field surveys (FAO, 2017;Lal et al, 2018).…”

“…Agriculture has been identified as one of the activities most responsible for the emission of carbon into the atmosphere, in the form of CO 2 . However, several studies (Cerri et al, 2004;FAO, 2017;Lal, 2018;Silva et al, 2018;Fernandes et al, 2018) show that agriculture can also act as a sink, sequestering CO 2 from the atmosphere and storing it in soil organic matter.…”

“…Also according to the report, the state of Rondônia occupies the third position in agricultural cultivation area (648,000 ha), of which 59% is destined for soy cultivation. Despite the impact caused by converting forest land use and occupation to agricultural crops, conservation practices have used degraded areas or integrated production systems for planting soybeans, preventing new areas from being deforested (SILVA et al, 2018). Even so, it is necessary to understand how the conversion of natural areas impacts maintaining carbon stocks in nature, so that adequate usage forms for production and conservation can be proposed.…”

“…Soybean crops have been grown in newly open and agricultural areas in the Amazon region in the recent years (CONAB, 2018), mainly over degraded pasture areas. Areas that were used for livestock farming have been used for soybean crops for indirect recovery of soil fertility (Silva et al, 2018). Soil degradation can be reversed through conservationist practices, which require the adoption and technical information of soil management and cultural practices adapted and appropriate to the region (Passos et al, 2017).…”
