Aggression After Traumatic Brain Injury: Prevalence and Correlates

Abstract: Aggression after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common but not well defined. Sixty-seven participants with first-time TBI were seen within three months of injury and evaluated for aggression. The prevalence of aggression was found to be 28.4% and to be predominantly verbal aggression. Post-TBI aggression was associated with new-onset major depression (p=0.02), poorer social functioning (p=0.04), and increased dependency on activities of daily living (p=0.03), but not with a history of substance abuse or adult… Show more

“…Prevalence rates for irritability and aggression after traumatic brain injury (TBI) for example range from 29% to 96% (see for example McNett, Sarver, & Wilczewski, 2012;Rao et al, 2009;Sabaz et al, 2014;Visscher, Van Meijel, Stolker, Wiersma, & Nijman, 2011). Scholten et al (2016) in a systematic review found that prevalence rates for depressive disorders after TBI are up to 21% to 57% after follow-up periods of on average 1.5 to 3 years.…”

“…Longitudinal studies have shown that aggressive behavior emerges in early childhood with a peak between 2 and 4 years of age, but decreases during childhood in most individuals (Alink et al, 2006;Cote et al, 2006Cote et al, , 2007Tremblay et al, 2004). Abnormal levels of aggression in childhood and adulthood are a characteristic of several psychiatric disorders (Coccaro 2012;Coie et al, 1992;Nestor, 2002) and may be caused by traumatic brain injury (Rao et al, 2009;Tateno et al, 2003), substance abuse (Boles & Miotto, 2003;Moore et al, 2008), and neurodegenerative diseases (Lai et al, 2003;Moechars et al, 1996;Volicer & Hurley, 2003).…”

“…In presented case, in programme A, relative beta training was applied, according to recent findings in the subject literature [26,34], although it proved to be ineffective. The patient's attention did not improve which, generally, is a bad sign for recovery [35][36][37][38][39].…”
