Aggressive Periodontitis and its Multidisciplinary Focus: Review of the Literature

Abstract: The purpose of this review is to have a current prospect of periodontal diseases and, in particular, aggressive periodontitis. To know its classification and clinical characteristics, such as the extent and age group affected, as well as its distribution in the population, etiology, genetic variations, among other factors that could affect the development of this disease. Also, reference is made to different diagnostic options and, likewise, the current treatment options.

“…Tooth decay and periodontitis are types of dental diseases caused by oral bacteria. Tooth decay leads to the formation of cavities, as known as dental caries, resulting from the growth of microbial biofilms that produce acid, infecting the enamel and dentine [2]. Periodontal disease is defined as an endogenous microbial disease that defects the tooth structure and periodontium [3].…”

“…Periodontitis is one of the most common periodontal diseases. It is a multifactorial disease that can be affected by genetic, environmental factors, living standards, and systemic diseases (AlJehani, 2014 ; Cheng et al, 2015 ; De Pablo et al, 2009 ; Frías‐Muñoz et al, 2018 ; Yoon et al, 2017 ). Data from previous studies have shown the different prevalence of periodontitis in the population, which is ranged from 13.5% to 83.5% (Balaji et al, 2018 ; Machado et al, 2018 ; Singh et al, 2012 ; Susin et al, 2011 ; Wellapuli & Ekanayake, 2017 ).…”

“…Chronic Periodontitis Disease (CPD) is a chronic multi-factorial inflammation disease because contribution of genetic and environmental factors as well as age, living standards and systemic diseases to initiation and progression of disease (1,2,3), which occurs in the supporting tissues of the tooth, that include gingiva , periodontal ligament , cementum and alveolar bone this is caused by the accumulation of bacterial groups on the surfaces of the teeth as well as between the teeth and thus will lead to side effects on the health gingiva due to the stimulation of the immune response against these bacterial assemblies that lead to damage and destroyed of gingival tissues and observed that the sensitivity of the host plays an important role in the initiation and development of chronic periodontitis (4,5). CPD is diagnosed by several indicators which include the presence and extent of periodontal pockets, loss of clinical attachment, pattern and extent of alveolar bone loss, or a combination of these findings (6).…”
