Agricultural Climate Change Adaptation in Kebumen, Central Java, Indonesia

Abstract: Productive agricultural areas in Kebumen, Central Java, Indonesia are potentially vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. We surveyed small-scale farmers to assess climate change-related perceptions and adaptations in the agriculture sector. The majority of the respondents agreed that there were changes in climatological variables affecting their farming activities, especially in terms of precipitation and temperature. However, the results also revealed that only 13% of respondents believed that h… Show more

“…In recent decades, Brantas has undergone a decline in its agricultural roles in terms of production, labor, and share of total domestic products from agricultural sectors [47]. Recently, in Java, there have been increasing reports of issues related to agricultural productivity ranging from elevated runoff to intensified drought occurrence [48,49]. Brantas is controlled by varying physical factors-from climatic to geomorphological (Figure 1).…”

“…The above condition is in line with the surface water resource crisis in Kediri that mainly occurs in the dry season and causes high water resource susceptibility (Widodo et al 2021). In addition to Kediri, drought conditions in the dry season have increased in several ar-eas in Indonesia and have affected agricultural productivity (Sekaranom et al 2021). In Central Java, surface water deficit due to agricultural demands mainly occurs in the upstream part of the watershed (Andriyani et al 2017).…”

“…Surface water is an example of a water resource that is withdrawn for various human activities, including agriculture. While agricultural water needs are proportional to the cropping area and intensity, surface water availability is determined by hydrological cycle components, especially those related to physiographic characteristics and dynamics in a region (Naylor et al 2007;Sekaranom et al 2021). Therefore, land-use change is a factor contributing to po-tential water availability.…”

“…Studies on the role of TEK in relation to risk management and reduction as well as the response to disasters, including climate changes and cross-culture around the world, have been performed by different researchers worldwide (Hop et al 2017;Rai and Kawas 2019;Zulfadrim et al 2019;Hosen et al 2020;Magalhaes et al 2021;Sekaranom et al 2021). However, studies on the cultural strategies of the different cultural backgrounds in dealing with disasters have rarely been undertaken.…”
