Agriculture Green Development in China and the UK: common objectives and converging policy pathways

Abstract: This paper has three aims. First, to examine how the negative environmental consequences of intensive agriculture have driven China and the UK to shift away from narrowly focused farm output policies and adopt more holistic green development pathways. Second, to explore the policy objectives they have in common. Third, to assess the numerous opportunities for joint research and knowledge sharing through the Sustainable Agriculture Innovation Network and other existing institutional mechanisms. “…Climate financing, green bonds, mitigation, and adaptation funds could replace/redirect official development assistance (ODA) funds, originally meant for poverty reduction, to address climate change (Targets 17.2,17.3,17.5) (Agrawala et al, 2004;Lokshall, 2006;Michaelowa and Michaelowa, 2007;Watts et al, 2015;Clapp and Pillay, 2017;Massé et al, 2020). Enhanced international cooperation through knowledge and technology sharing provides opportunities to work on climate issues in a collective way (Targets 17.6,17.7,17.17) (Lu et al, 2020). An operational technology bank that helps in capacity building can horizontally deploy best management practices to mitigate methane emissions (Targets 17.8,17.18) (Ngunga et al, 2020).…”

“…1) environmentalism -openness of the enterprise to the external environment; 2) compliance -internal consistency of the elements of the strategy; 3) entrepreneurial skills -focus on results and benefits; 4) flexibility -the adaptive ability of the system; 5) innovation -introduction of scientific and technological developments in the activities of the enterprise. Lu et al (2020) propose to move away from traditional governance in the agri-food sector and embrace more holistic paths to green development. In turn, Shubravskaya (2015) and Han et al (2020) examine the management of an agri-food enterprise through the perspective of its mission.…”

“…e state attaches great importance to the integration of the agricultural industry chain and the coordinated development of the ecological environment. From 2012 to 2019, the green development pattern of agriculture has gradually formed [2], which better adapts to the miniaturization, quality, and re nement characteristics of consumer demand [3,4]. Strengthening the construction of the whole agricultural industry chain and green transformation and upgrading, ensuring the e ective supply of high-quality agricultural products and meeting the requirements of ecological environment quality, will become the main direction of green and high-quality agricultural development in China.…”
