Agroecological practices to support tropical livestock farming systems: a Caribbean and Latin American perspective

Abstract: With global climate changes currently occurring, and particularly given the severe energy and food shortages occurring throughout tropical regions, agroecological (AE) systems are drawing renewed attention as an efficient alternative to intensive models of production, particularly unsuitable in regions of the world such as the Caribbean or Latin America. There is a pressing need to focus on livestock farming systems (LFS) and characterize their potential contributions to global sustainability. A multidisciplin… Show more

“…Pratama et al (2021) report three main preferences of a farmer in selecting forages: the palatability of the cattle, nutrient content, and forage productivity. A feed integration system is applied to maximize production to increase farming efficiency (Alexandre et al, 2021). 4.…”

“…The number of smallholders willing to invest in their farms is increasing rapidly in the tropics, particularly those with mixed systems in which manure is used to fertilize the crops and other feedstuffs to nourish their livestock [ 11 , 33 ]. Meat or milk produced under these more natural pasture conditions has attracted a large portion of consumers who are willing to purchase products from these types of systems; they are perceived to be more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and natural, and to feature more humane production conditions for livestock [ 34 ].…”

“…However, there is a need for continuous evolution in dual-purpose management practices, in those countries situated in the region, to meet the demand for more and better products from local cattle without damaging the environment [ 11 ]. In addition, there is fierce competition for water and other resources between the need for industrial growth and the requirement to procure feed for the ever-increasing population, particularly in developing countries [ 12 ].…”

“…In Mexico, the most widely used maternal breed for sheep rearing is the Pelibuey (Chay-Canul et al, 2016;2019a). These systems are characterized by minimal use of inputs, low or no application of modern technologies, and poor adoption techniques (Alexandre et al, 2021). Under these conditions, the constant evaluation of the animals' growth poses a major challenge for small producers, more so for the measurement of live weight (LW), due to the high cost of direct measurement equipment, such as livestock scales (Chay-Canul et al, 2019a;Canul-Solis et al, 2020;Sabbioni et al, 2020).…”
