Air pollution and climate change impact on forest ecosystems in Asian region – a review

Abstract: Forests are complex ecosystems comprising various trophic levels responsible for carrying out various biogeochemical processes and providing ecosystem services. However, forests in Asia are doubly challenged by climate change and air pollution. The rapidly changing air quality, with increasing concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs), trace gases, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and ozone (O 3 ) also causes global warming leading to climate change, thus jointly creating a challenging… Show more

“…Recent studies on the removal efficiency of vegetation for PM have mainly concentrated on investigating the correlation between leaf characteristics, microstructure, and particle accumulation (Liu et al, 2018;Read et al, 2020;Avellan et al, 2021). Additionally, various studies have concentrated primarily on the velocity of particle deposition, a factor influenced by tree canopies and the leaf area index (LAI), which plays a critical role in determining the efficiency of trees in removing PM (Han et al, 2020;Corada et al, 2021;Sonwani et al, 2022).…”

“…This study considers the seven major air pollutants emission which are responsible for the negative effects on the public health, crops yield, forest and other socio-economic and environmental effects (Karlsson et al, 2020;Nakarmi et al, 2020;Sonwani et al, 2022). The air pollutants considered in this study are carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, non-methane volatile organic compound, sulphur dioxide, particulate matter, black carbon, and organic carbon.…”

“…The county has severe air pollution that triggers climate change and vice-versa. Air pollution and climate change, are closely intertwined (Singh and Yadav, 2021;Sonwani et al, 2022b). Matyssek et al (2012), described air pollution as a component of climate change.…”

“…The bad air quality with changing climate exacerbates one another issue, which is variable atmospheric composition (D'Amato et al, 2002). This not only poses significant risks to respiratory illnesses and cardiovascular diseases (Ravindra et al, 2019;Goel et al, 2021;Sonwani et al, 2022a), but also impairs agricultural productivity (Wiebe et al, 2019), economic loss (Sathaye et al, 2006;Saurabh Sonwani and Vandana Maurya, 2019;Parikh and Bhavsar, 2023) disrupts vegetation and ecosystems, and hampers sustainable development (Sonwani et al, 2022b). The Climate India 2022 report by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE) highlighted that India recorded weather extremes on 22 out of 273 days between January to September 2022(Climate India, 2022.…”
