“…Furthermore, the Tyrrhenian coasts are among the most polluted ones of Mediterranean area, like eastern Campania (“Land of Fire”) and many others in the entire area (Tamburrino et al, 2019 ; Triassi et al, 2019 ; Vichi et al, 2019 ). Decades of waste dumping practices, associated with the widespread use of pesticides and fertilizers, incineration processes, and massive release of environmental contaminants, have contaminated the whole environment, including the marine coastal ecosystem (Ariano et al, 2019 ; Esposito et al, 2018 ; Legambiente, 2003 , 2007 , 2018 ; Piazzese et al, 2019 ; Rodhouse et al, 2015 ; Senior & Mazza, 2004 ).…”

“…Photochemical formation of ozone has been reported with mostly slow increase in the Western Mediterranean area in background stations, following the low precursor emissions of NO X and VOC, while the increase in ozone volume ratios was much higher at urban stations [38]. On account of the influence of VOC on ozone formation in the maritime boundary layer over the sea, research is conducted directly on the sea with no significant impact on the ozone concentration found [39,40]. Ship emissions across the Mediterranean Sea show positive contribution to the summertime average ozone volume ratios of up to 12 ppb and up to 40 ppb near busy lines, such as should be the situation in Malta [41].…”

“…Research activity in the Mediterranean basin was also carried out by the Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research of the National Research Council (CNR-IIA) in the framework of the Med-Oceanor measurement program through cruise campaigns performed regularly since 2000. In 2015 the cruise of the research ship "Minerva Uno" followed a route in the central Mediterranean area (Tyrrhenian Sea) which also included the Aeolian Islands [8,9] and in 2017 the evaluation of the impact of this geologically active field on air quality of the southeastern area of Tyrrhenian Sea represented one of the research objectives of the cruise [10].…”
