Conventional hierarchical modulation (HM) only provides two levels of unequal error protection (UEP) for multimedia traffic transmission. An HM-based scheme is proposed that provides multiple levels of UEP by exploiting the structure of the Alamouti scheme. A typical Alamouti scheme operates based on the assumptions that the modulation scheme used for the transmission at each antenna is the same and that the power in each antenna is equal. In the proposed system, these two operating assumptions are relaxed, in that the modulation schemes as well as the transmission powers for the two antennas are varied in order to propose a multiple level UEP mechanism for multimedia traffic. The concept is applied to a recently proposed system which uses the Alamouti space-time block code (STBC) structure with HM and signal space diversity (SSD), and it is shown via theoretical and simulation results how the simple UEP mechanism can accommodate the simultaneous transmission of multiple classes of multimedia traffic.

In many applications, it is necessary to transmit images at a remote station, where wired Internet service is not available. In this case, wireless local loop (WLL) can help in making wireless link between one end node of the internet and remote service center. In such link, the communication is heavily affected by large and small scale fading; hence the received signal experiences huge distortion in case of forward error correction. Otherwise, huge service delay arises due to frequent negative acknowledgements. To combat the situation, we can choose Alamouti channel of full rate and fully orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC). Our aim is to transmit images through Alamouti channel and to observe the quality of the recovered image, in context of bit error rate (BER). We have also observed the impact of fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) on the image without application of error correction or detection technique of channel coding. To ensure security, we apply the RSA algorithm on each pixel prior transmitting and decrypt them at the receiving end, where we found no impairment from the algorithm. Finally, we observe that the relative performance of the system changes digital modulation schemes.

The recently proposed quadrature spatial modulation aided single-input multiple-output media-based modulation (QSM aided SIMO-MBM) improves the spectral efficiency and achieves a high data rate and overall system error performance when compared with conventional SIMO-MBM and SIMO schemes. Cooperative network (CN) involves collaboration among nodes to improve wireless network reliability, link quality, and spectral efficiency. This paper investigates the performance of QSM aided SIMO-MBM in CN by employing the decode and forward relaying technique, which utilizes two source nodes that simultaneously transmit a unique message block on the same time slot to the relay node; the relay node decodes the received message block from both transmitting nodes, before re-encoding and re-transmitting the decoded message block in the next time slot to the destinations in order to enhance the error performance of the QSM aided SIMO-MBM further. Each node can decode the data of the other node using network coding (NC) techniques. Algebraic algorithms are applied to the detected message to accumulate the various transmissions. The theoretical average error probability of the proposed scheme was formulated using a lower bound technique, and the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) results obtained validated the result. The MCS results achieved exhibit a significant improvement of 8 dB at 6 b/s/Hz for a BER of 10 À5 and 12 dB at 8 b/s/Hz for a BER of 10 À5 over the conventional QSM aided SIMO-MBM scheme. Consequently, the obtained results show that the system configuration with m rf ¼ 2 outperforms the system configuration with m rf ¼ 4 for the proposed scheme.
