Alcohol Expectancies Mediate and Moderate the Associations between Big Five Personality Traits and Adolescent Alcohol Consumption and Alcohol-Related Problems

Abstract: Personality and expectancies are relevant psychological factors for the development of adolescent alcohol use and misuse. The present study examined their direct, mediated and moderated effects on different drinking behaviors in adolescence. Personality domains of the five-factor model, positive and negative alcohol expectancies (AEs), alcohol use during the week and the weekend, and alcohol-related problems were assessed in a sample of 361 adolescents. Different personality dimensions were directly associated… Show more

“…Extraversion was positively associated with increased alcohol initiation, consumption and problems, consistent with some (Edwards et al, 2016, Ibanez et al, 2015) but not all (Littlefield et al, 2010) previous findings. Previous work suggests that this association may be related to drinking motives (Kuntsche et al, 2006) or expectancies (Ibanez et al, 2015).…”

“…Correlates and determinants of binge drinking Person-specific factors (I): personality, impulsivity, attentional bias Concerning the 'Big Five' personality traits, there is consistent evidence that binge drinking is more common among those who score highly on extroversion, but low on agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and neuroticism (Cheng & Furnham, 2013;Ibanez et al, 2015;Zhang, Bray, Zhang, & Lanza, 2015). However, when a recent large-scale study in Britain accounted for other factors, such as gender, intelligence and socio-economic status, only extroversion and agreeableness remained significant predictors (Cheng & Furnham, 2013).…”
