Alginate-Based Composite and Its Biomedical Applications

Abstract: Alginate has received much attention due to its biocompatibility. However, the properties of pure alginate are limited, such as weak mechanical strength, which limits its application. Alginate-based composite effectively overcomes the defect of pure alginate. The molecular weight and microstructure can be designed. More importantly, the essential properties for clinical application are improved, including mechanical properties, biocompatibility, gelation ability, chondrogenic differentiation and cell prolifera… Show more

“…Most bioprinting studies use biomaterials that are hydrogel precursors for the formulation of bio-inks as they might be crosslinked into hydrogels in the post-fabrication gelation process. Examples include polyurethane synthetic-based hydrogels [ 17 ], gelatin protein-based hydrogels [ 28 ] and alginate polysaccharide-based hydrogels [ 45 , 219 ]. In addition to a recent intermediate approach in the bioprinting field, pre-crosslinking of hydrogel precursors’ solution to a higher viscosity state is often applied.…”

“…Due to the presence of a polymeric network, hydrogels can absorb fluids such as water to achieve a mass of approximately one thousand times their dry mass without dissolving (Thakur & Thakur, 2015). In recent times there has been an enhanced interest in the utilization of natural polymers rather than synthetic (fossil-based) ones for hydrogels production, due to the renewed drive to explore fossil alternatives (Deng et al, 2021;Safarzadeh Kozani et al, 2021;Samadian et al, 2020). In line with this interest, the potential of utilizing lignin as a sustainable feedstock in hydrogel development has been investigated (Fernandes et al, 2013).…”

“…One emerging area of interest in the field of dermatology and skincare is the development of bio-compatible materials and their application in facial sheet masks. Among the most innovative of these materials are alginate and calcium [1] [2]. The potential health benefits, enhanced skin penetration, and the easy applicability of such masks make this study highly relevant.…”
