Alginate Based Microparticle Drug Delivery Systems for the Treatment of Eye Cancer

Abstract: Alginate based microparticle drug delivery systems were prepared for the sustained release of antitumor drugs. Two drugs, cyclophosphane and 5-fluorouracil, were encapsulated into the microparticles. The drug loaded microparticles were fabricated using a very convenient method under very mild conditions by the gelation of alginate with calcium cation. Modified microparticles were obtained by syringed dropwise a solution of drugs in sodium alginate into chitosan solution in calcium chloride. The effect of polym… Show more

“…Owing to mucoadhesive properties, ALG are regarded as proper polymer excipients to prepare buccal [97][98][99], nasal [100,101], ocular [102,103], and gastrointestinal dosage forms [104][105][106][107][108]. Recently, several studies have shown favourable mucoadhesiveness of ALG-based applications in contact with vaginal mucosa tissue [108,109].…”

“…Alginatebased microparticles containing cyclophosphane and 5-Fu were synthesized for the controlled delivery of anticancer agents to cure intraocular carinoma. The synthesized microparticles exhibited 5-8-fold superior efficiency as compared to free drugs [151]. In continuation, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-fasicinated porous Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microparticles were layered by alginate and chitosan for the sustainable delivery of DOX.…”
