Aligned silica nanofibres

Abstract: Large-scale highly aligned silica nanofibres were produced on silicon substrates. The diameters of these nanofibres vary from 50 to 100 nm and the lengths are up to several millimetres. Transmission electron microscopy and selected-area electron diffraction reveal that the fibres are in an amorphous state. The growth of silica nanofibres is probably controlled by a vapour–solid process. Gas-phase SiO seems to play the key role in the synthesis, serving as a transportation medium.

“…A high-magnification TEM image ( Fig. 4(b)) reveals that the 1D nanostructure is noncrystalline; the fiber is clean, smooth and straight and no tapered or beaded morphology such as is often observed for other nanowires is found [15]. An SAED pattern (inset of Fig.…”

“…Compared to the easy growth of crystalline Si NWs, most of the grown SiO x NWs have been amorphous in nature. In addition, SiO x NWs and related nanostructures can be obtained without catalysts. , The arrays of nanotubes and nanofibers and NWs , of silica (SiO 2 ) have been synthesized by thermal evaporation of Si and SiO 2 mixed powders. The growth of well-aligned Si/SiO x composite NWs was demonstrated using SiCl 4 /H 2 in a hot filament chemical vapor deposition reactor .…”

“…In most studies catalyst based growth is widely used [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. However, few have reported the growth of SiNWs on the non-catalyst substrates [21][22][23][24]. Growing SiNWs without a catalyst has some benefits over the catalytic route.…”
