Alkali silicate binders: effect of SiO2/Na2O ratio and alkali metal ion type on the structure and mechanical properties

Abstract: The influence of SiO 2 :Na 2 O molar ratio and the nature of an alkali metal (Na vs. K) in commercial aqueous alkali silicate on the microstructure, textural properties, phase composition, and hydrolytic stability of an alkali silicate binder have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption technique, X-ray diffractometry, thermal analysis, and dissolution tests. It has been found that microstructure and textural properties of the alkali silicate binder depend both on s… Show more

“…The hydrolytic stability of the geopolymers is reflected in the stability of the aluminosilicate gel in aquatic conditions. Contact with water causes hydrolysis of Si-O-Si bonds in the gel and release of Si followed by partial degradation of the structure (30). The presence of Al ions in the leachate indicates a certain degree of dealumination due to the degradation of Al-O-Si bonds (31).…”

“…They compose of water‐glass solution as binder and inorganic powders as fillers. The water‐glass solution contains monomeric silica anions SiO x false(OHfalse)4normalxnormalx and internally condensed charged silica particles in equilibrium with Si(OH) 4 . The water‐glass bonding, attributable to hydrogen bond, can be realized at relatively low temperature and has high bonding strength .…”

“…7,8 Silicate adhesive has many performance advantages such as non-toxic, good temperature tolerance, high bonding strength, small bonding stress, and good operability, [9][10][11] often used for bonding materials such as metal, ceramic, glass, stone, soil, etc. [12][13][14][15][16] The application of silicate adhesive covers aerospace, machinery, electronics, chemical industry, construction, and other fields. However, the direct application of silicate in wood adhesive is still rare due to the defects of brittleness and water resistance.…”
