All-optical NRZ-to-RZ format conversion at 10 Gbit/s with 1-to-4 wavelength multicasting exploiting cross-phase modulation & four-wave-mixing in single dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber

Abstract: All-optical NRZ-to-RZ format conversion with a function of wavelength multicasting is proposed in this paper, which is realized by exploiting cross-phase modulation (XPM) and Four-Wave-Mixing (FWM) in a dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (DF-HNL-PCF). The designed format converter is experimentally demonstrated, for which the 1-to-4 wavelength multicasting is achieved simultaneously by filtering out two FWM idler waves and both blue-chirped and red-chirped components of the broadened … Show more

“…SOA that works in the saturation region increases the effect of nonlinear behaviors such as cross-gain modulation (XGM), cross-phase modulation (XPM), and four-wave mixing (FWM) [16][17][18][19][20]. There are many parameters which guided the output characteristics of SOA under this situation; the pump power played as the key factor that controlled the behavior of SOA outputs responses.…”

“…An appreciable number of all-optical data-format conversions have been reported, including semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gain compression [1,2], a monolithically integrated Michelson interferometer (MI) employing SOAs [3], an SOA/fiber grating wavelength converter [4], a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) with SOA [5][6][7]15], cross-phase modulation (XPM) and/or four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a nonlinear photonic crystal fiber [8] or a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) employing SOAs [9], and a FabryPerot (FP) laser diode with dual-wavelength injection locking [10,17]. Currently, research has been extended to all-optical format conversions between on-off keying (OOK) and phase-shift keying (PSK) [11,12].…”
