All‐optical virtual private network in passive optical networks

Abstract: We review recent progress on all-optical virtualprivate-network (VPN) schemes in passive optical networks (PONs). PON is a promising candidate in future access areas to provide broadband services with low cost. With all-optical virtual private network (VPN) function, PON can support efficient internetworking among end users with dedicated optical channels, thus enabling guaranteed bandwidth and enhanced security at the physical layer. Here, we discuss and compare existing schemes of all-optical VPNs in time-di… Show more

“…Meantime, in order to provide dedicated optical channels for end users, optical virtual private network (VPN) in PON has been investigated with great interest [2]. Typically, optical VPNs need to be reconfigured to allow new users to inter-communicate and maintain secured connections in dynamic networks.…”

“…As PON is of tree topology, the communications between ONUs are conventionally accomplished via OLT on layer 2 or 3. To increase efficiency, reduce latency, and enhance privacy, inter‐ONU‐ communication (IOC) can be implemented in layer 1 (physical layer) without involving OLT, and is called all‐optical virtual private network (VPN) . Several IOC schemes have been proposed .…”

“…The paper focuses on the IOC between ONUs in different wavelength groups. The IOC between the ONUs in the same wavelength group can be achieved by the previous proposals .…”

“…Through VPN, the intra-network is available for remote users. In the access network, passive optical network (PON) as its main technology has been employed [5,6]. Thus, the research on virtualization of access network mainly aims at the virtualization of PON, i.e., virtual PON (VPON) [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14].…”
