Allelic Variants for Complement Factors C3, C4, and B in Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis

Abstract: Impaired immune defense mechanisms and genetic factors appear to play a role in susceptibility to acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG). Therefore, possible etiological mechanisms might involve genes at the Major Histocompatibility Complex, which include the complement factor loci. We have tested for a possible association between certain complement factor alleles and ANUG using a case-control study design. Specific alleles at complement factors C3 and C4, and properdin factor B (Bf) loci were determi… Show more

“…Negative results from studies of possible association between known inherited disorders and periodontal disease should not be discounted as of no relevance since they can help to narrow the focus of interest to host factors of greater importance. In this connection, recent reports have provided no evidence for an association of IgA deficiency or agammaglobulinaemia with periodontitis (Robertson et al 1980) or of inherited variants of complement components C3, C4 and B with acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (Melnick et al 1988). The relationship between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus is controversial (Hugoson et al 1989).…”

“…Local factors (see Appendix 4, Table A4.5d, in online journal), including decorative crowns or orthodontic therapy may favor the onset of NG. Body geometry, thermoregulatory abnormalities, allelic variants for complement factors, and properdin factor B or erythrocyte catalase activity, have also been studied with inconclusive results.…”
