Allelopathic and Herbicidal Effects of Crude Extract from Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M.King and H.Rob. on Echinochloa crus-galli and Amaranthus viridis

Abstract: The present study was aimed at investigating the allelopathic effects of a crude extract from Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M.King and H.Rob. (Siam weed). The effects of 70% crude ethanol extract from the whole plant, leaf, stem, and root on the germination and growth of Echinochloa crus-galli and Amaranthus viridis seedlings were evaluated using Petri-dish tests under laboratory conditions. Crude extracts from the leaf showed the highest inhibitory activity. The leaf extract (OR) was further separated by sequent… Show more

“…The hexane fraction obtained from the aqueous methanol leaf extracts of C. odorata suppressed chlorophylls and carotenoid contents in the leaves of Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P.Beauv. [ 127 ]. These observations suggest that the extracts disturb amylase activity in the seeds, cell division, and reduce the pigments of photosynthesis, which may cause the suppression of the photosynthesis and growth.…”

“…Therefore, researchers have focused on utilizing allelopathic species and their allelopathic compounds as natural herbicides [10][11][12]. The crude extracts or plant residues can be directly applied as bioherbicides, while the compounds isolated from the allelopathic plants can be used as templates for developing natural herbicides [13][14][15]. However, differences in the allelopathic compound composition, concentration, and allopathic properties of the plant species vary significantly with effects unique to the target plant species [16].…”

“…Siam weed leaf extract also controlled weed growth (Muzaiyanah, 2020). In addition, Siam we ed l eaf ex tract con tain s in hi bi to ry compounds such as herbicide activity and can be used as a post-growing herbicide for weed control (Poonpaiboonpipat et al, 2021). Allelopathic compounds of weeds can be used to control other weeds and are more environmentally friendly (Srikrishnah and Begam, 2019).…”
