Allelopathy and allelobiosis: efficient and economical alternatives in agroecosystems

M. Han,
H. Yang,
H. Huang
et al.

Abstract: Chemical interactions in plants often involve plant allelopathy and allelobiosis. Allelopathy is an ecological phenomenon leading to interference among organisms, while allelobiosis is the transmission of information among organisms. Crop failures and low yields caused by inappropriate management can be related to both allelopathy and allelobiosis. Therefore, research on these two phenomena and the role of chemical substances in both processes will help us to understand and upgrade agroecosystems. In this revi… Show more

“…During growth and development, plants change their surrounding microecological environment by releasing specific metabolites that affect the growth and development of other plants [46]. Allelopathy includes promotion and inhibition [47]. Allelopathic compounds can inhibit seed germination and slow or destroy normal plant growth.…”

“…The importance of allelopathy and allelobiosis in plant–plant interactions has received a great deal of attention in the past decades [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. However, allelopathy and allelobiosis are usually studied separately, despite their necessary linkage in nature.…”

“…Allelopathy and allelobiosis have provided fascinating insights into eco-evolutionary relationships and represent potential strategies for sustainable agriculture and forestry [ 9 , 16 , 20 , 21 ]. This review will focus on the recent advancements in the wide field of allelopathy and allelobiosis in plant–plant interactions.…”
