The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of ocular symptoms and compare the demographic and clinical characteristics in AR patients depending on sensitisation to various types of aeroallergens. Allergic rhinitis is defined as an IgE-mediated inflammation of the lining of the nose that is characterized by nasal symptoms, including nasal congestion, sneezing, itching of nose and runny nose. Patients suffering from allergic rhinitis frequently experience ocular symptoms such as ocular redness, eye itching and tears. The frequency of ocular symptoms in our study population was 27,6%. No statistical significance was found in the mean ages of the patients who did or did not experience ocular symptoms p>0,05 (p=0,243). Our results indicated that there were no statistical differences (p>0,05) among the groups of allergic rhinitis patients based on experiencing nasal symptoms according to the types of aeroallergens. Our results indicated that there were significant experiences of ocular symptoms in patients who were sensitised to outdoor aeroallergens (p<0,001) and significant sensitisation to both outdoor and indoor aeroallergens (p<0,05). Experiencing the examined ocular symptoms, including ocular redness, eye itching and tears, demonstrated highly statistical significance (p<0,001) among the groups of allergic rhinitis patients who were sensitised to indoor aeroallergens and outdoor aeroallergens, and there was statistical significance (p<0,05) among the groups of allergic rhinitis patients who were sensitised to indoor aeroallergens and both types of aeroallergens (indoor and outdoor). Ocular symptoms are more common in patients who are sensitised to outdoor aeroallergens.

Result: The population under study was almost equally distributed between both genders with minimal female predominance, 312 (52%). Age distribution of positive allergens was almost equally distributed among each decade from 10 to 50 years. Two hundred fifty-eight (43%) were found to have another associated allergic comorbid condition; bronchial asthma was the most common, 186 (31%). Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus was the most commonly encountered positive aeroallergen found in 252 (42%), while Walnut was found as the most prevalent food allergen 48 (8%). Conclusion: In this study, inhalant allergens are more frequently encountered whereas food allergens are less among tested subjects. Weeds, dust mite and animal allergens are most common inhalant allergens. Morbidities associated with allergies are common in Bahrain. Allergic population in Bahrain is diverse in terms of nature of allergens.

Objective:In this study, we aimed to evaluate coexistent allergic conjunctivitis with allergic rhinitis in Van province and the patients' quality of life in this region. Methods:A total of 94 patients who were admitted to the Otorhinolaryngology Clinics of Van Province Training and Research Hospital and Erciş State Hospital were included in this study. All patients underwent an ophthalmologic evaluation for coexistent allergic conjunctivitis. Moreover, allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis symptom scoring was applied to all patients. The rhinoconjunctivitis quality-of-life scale (RQLQ) was used to assess quality of life in all patients.Results: Mean total symptom score was found to be 12.1±4.2. In 37.2% of patients, coexistent allergic conjunctivitis was diagnosed. Scores of RQLQ sleep, non-hay fever complaints, nasal and ophthalmic complaints, and restricted activities were significantly higher in the group with coexistent allergic conjunctivitis than in the group with no allergic conjunctivitis. Conclusion:Patients with allergic rhinitis must be evaluated by taking the places where they live into account. It is crucial that the treatment procedures of particularly patients with ophthalmic complaints should be planned after they are examined by an ophthalmologist. It should be kept in mind that patients with allergic rhinitis must also be examined by a psychiatrist when necessary.
