“…[16][17][18] In addition, salicylates have a favourable safety record, with few reports of allergenic effects of these compounds. 19,20 However, a consensus is yet to be reached on whether salicylates used in sunscreens are photostable, that is, if they do not degrade upon prolonged UV exposure. Many publications report that they are indeed photostable, 18,[21][22][23] while other reports also exist to the contrary.…”

“…118‐60‐5) is classed as an ultraviolet B absorber but is also used as a fragrance compound 9 . Mirales et al and Mortz et al found no cross‐reactivity with other salicylates despite extensive testing to other salicylates in cases sensitized to ethylhexyl salicylate 9,10 . Conversely, a separate case developed a positive reaction to benzyl salicylate 10% pet without any identifiable exposure history, indicating a likely cross‐reaction 11 .…”

“…Mortz et al published the case of a woman allergic to this sunscreen who had been tested with 21 other salicylates, the patch test with benzyl salicylate causing a doubtful reaction, whereas the patient described by Miralles et al did not react positively to the salicylates tested, including benzyl salicylate. Scheman and Te reported three patients allergic to benzyl salicylate who were also tested with ethylhexyl salicylate; one of these reacted positively to the UV filter as well.…”
