Allergic diseases attributable to atopy in a population sample of Asian children

Abstract: The proportion of allergic diseases attributable to atopy remains a subject of controversy. This study aimed to estimate the population risk of physician-diagnosed asthma, rhinitis and eczema attributed to atopy among a population sample of Asian school-age children. Asian children aged 5–18 years (n = 1321) in the Prediction of Allergies in Taiwanese CHildren (PATCH) study were tested for serum allergen-specific immunoglobulin E. Physician-diagnosed asthma, rhinitis and eczema were assessed by a modified Inte… Show more

“…We used chi-square or the Fisher's exact test to detect significant differences between sensitization to CM, egg whites, or wheat, and Specific IgE between 0 and 0.34 kUA/L using ImmunoCAP or 0 and 26 LUs using MAST was considered negative [18,19]. For ImmunoCAP, positive sensitization (class 1-6) referred to values > = 0.35 kUA/L, and for MAST it referred to values > = 27 LUs [20,21]. Associated factors included singleton or multiple pregnancies, parity, meconium staining, maternal age, normal spontaneous delivery or cesarean section, birth length, body weight, head and chest circumferences, meconium passage, birth season, and weeks of gestation.…”

“…Allergic disorders are type I hypersensitivity reactions, which are IgE-mediated immune responses against diverse antigens/allergens. This reaction is immediately provoked, and allergen/IgE-bound mast cells and basophils are essential components in atopy [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. In immunological cells, IgE is crosslinked to FceRI, which activates signaling cascades.…”

“…This upward trend is not limited to developed nations but also affects developing countries like China. The escalating burden of allergic diseases poses substantial challenges to public health systems and necessitates effective prevention and treatment strategies [4][5][6] .…”
