Allergic to ChatGPT? Introducing a Desensitization Protocol to Embrace Artificial Intelligence

Dear Editor, The "ChatGPT allergy" concept, while seemingly absurd, reflects the unease some individuals experience in response to rapid technological advancements, akin to allergic reactions. Tachycardia and chest tightness can manifest when confronted with novel technology, signaling technological apprehension. As Arthur C. Clarke noted, advanced technology can seem like "magic," inciting anxiety for some. In this context, we encounter artificial intelligence (AI) and generative pretrained transformers (GPTs). AI aims to emulate human cognitive processes, and GPTs, an advanced form of AI, excel at generating human-like text. These technologies, born of human creativity, enhance productivity and efficiency.It is vital to acknowledge the ever-evolving AI landscape. Current technologies like ChatGPT 4 will soon yield successors like GPT-5, ushering in the AGI era. This progression could pose challenges for those resistant to current technology, emphasizing the need for adaptability. The swift evolution of AI and its potential implications have prompted industry leaders like OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, to advocate for proactive regulation, given the severe consequences of missteps in AI technology. This call for caution is further supported by over 1,100 signatories, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, who urged AI laboratories to pause for 6 months to address the societal risks posed by large-scale AI systems.AI and GPT technologies, particularly ChatGPT, released by OpenAI in 2022, have shown potential in allergy and immunology. They can detect primary immunodeficiency disorders, improve diagnostic accuracy, facilitate clinical practice, and optimize practice management. ChatGPT also contributes to healthcare education and research by improving academic writing and data analysis. ChatGPT, a promising AI tool, can potentially transform academic writing, data analysis, and workflow in allergy and immunology [1][2][3][4]. However, its limitations are evident, such as in a study where it inaccurately proposed nutritional advice for individuals with specific food allergies [5]. This underscores the necessity of human oversight in AI utilization. As we progress toward advanced AI models like GPT-5, we must mitigate risks by enhancing safety, accuracy, and ethical use. Despite their potential, these technologies cannot replace human expertise, which remains indispensable in allergy and immunology [6, 7].We propose a 12-step desensitization program (Table 1) inspired by drug desensitization practices [8] to alleviate ChatGPT-related apprehension.
