Allergy sensitization and asthma among 13-14 year old school children in Nigeria

Abstract: Background: The prevalence of asthma and role of atopy in asthma among children has not been clearly defined in Nigeria. Objective: To determine the prevalence of asthma and investigate risk factors related to allergy sensitization among urban and rural school children in southwest Nigeria. Methods: Validated ISAAC questionnaire was administered to 1736 high school children in randomly selected schools in rural and urban communities. Identified asthma cases were matched to controls. “…This may have resulted in wide confidence intervals and thus reduced power to detect a statistically significant difference. Some studies had small sample sizes and are likely to have been underpowered . Although the prevalence of SPT was generally higher in many investigations, its association with helminths was not consistent for reasons that are not well understood.…”

“…The most commonly studied allergy‐related outcomes were reported wheeze, eczema and asthma, all with a prevalence of less than 10%. The percentage of positive SPT responses varied from 2% to 73% . Generally, food allergens such as peanut elicited fewer SPT responses compared to environmental allergens such as house dust mite and cockroach.…”

“…1 Los alergenos más frecuentes que ocasionan sensibilización alérgica en los niños con asma son los ácaros del polvo casero [3][4][5][6] y los epitelios de gato 7,8 o perro. 9,10 Sin embargo, el tipo de alergenos difiere notoriamente en función de la zona climática.…”

“…The prevalence of asthma in this region in the past 2 years in school children aged 13 -14 years reported in a previous study was 7.2% [19]. The study population included apparently healthy 24 children (12 asthmatics and 12 non-asthmatics) of similar ages and gender (Table 1), which is a subset of the 1690 children screened with ISAAC questionnaires designed to diagnose patients with asthma.…”

“…All subjects produced fresh stool samples that were examined for ova and parasites at the parasitology laboratory at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria using the previously described procedure at the parasitology laboratory at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria [19]. These ova were used to identify the types of adult helminthic parasite present in the intestine.…”
