The ability of plants to adapt to environmental variability and self-regulate in complex habitats often reflected in leaf anatomical changes. In an assessment of 19 characteristics of Betula albosinensis leaves, samples were taken from trees grown along an altitudinal gradient on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and distributed at three altitudes: 2434 m, 2824 m, and 3060 m. Anatomical characteristics of the leaves' blade, mesophyll, and midrib were studied using paraffin slice technology. We found that altitudes and changes in altitude affected the leaf anatomy. As altitude increased, the blade and the mesophyll became thinner, and the transport tissues of the midrib became relatively underdeveloped. However, intra-altitudinal variation was the main source of phenotypic variance. Pearson correlation and principal component analysis revealed that each trait had different ecological dimensions, and that there were trade-offs and covariance relationships between traits. In summary, to adapt to the local altitudinal conditions, Betula albosinensis may exhibit multiple responses, such as reducing investment in leaves, which can boost short-term growth rates, and the "quick investment and return" strategy. Our findings are useful in understanding anatomical adaptations and their trade-offs to environmental variation.

Leaf anatomical traits can reflect plant adaptation to environmental changes. However, whether the trade-offs among leaf anatomical traits can reflect the strategies spectrum of plant response to environmental changes and the strategic spectrum will shift with altitudes are not clear. In this study, 286 plant species from 19 altitudinal gradients from 1050 m to 3070 m on the eastern Tibetan Plateau were selected and 16 anatomical characters of blade, mesophyll and midrib were measured. The strategic and strategic spectra of leaf anatomical trait formation were by principal components analysis, followed by generalized additive models of the strategic spectra with shift in elevation to test the shift of strategy spectra along altitudes. Our results showed that the midrib xylem thickness of woody increased with increasing altitude, while other traits decreased; the upper and lower epidermis width, midrib parenchyma cell thickness and midrib lower epidermis cell thickness of herb increased with increasing altitudes, while other traits decreased. Blade strategic spectrum (BES), blade and mesophyll strategic spectrum (BMSS) and midrib strategic spectrum (MSS) were formed in the tissue of leaves, and the score of principal component one (PC1) was not significant between herbs and woody plants ( P>0.05). There were mainly formed the spectrum of conservation and support strategies and the spectrum of resource acquisition and consumption, etc. With increasing altitudes, the habitat tended to become unsuitable for plant growth and the resources available to plants are reduced, plants shift from a “invest-fast-reap” acquisition strategy to a “invest-slow-reap” conservative strategy.

The allometric relationship among different functional traits is an ecological strategy for plants to promote resource utilization, which indicates the ability of plants to adapt to environmental changes coordinately. In this study, we conducted a field survey on Haloxylon ammodendron and H. persicum among different terrains (dune crest, eastern slope, western slope and inter-dune) in the Gurbantunggut Desert, obtained their quantitative and morphological characteristics, and analyzed their allometric relationships between plant height and canopy radius, plant height and basal diameter by using standardized major axis estimation. We found that: (1) The dominated terrains of H. ammodendron and H. persicum were different; (2) The individual morphology of the two Haloxylon species changed significantly with the terrains (p < 0.05), with the largest and smallest ones growing on the eastern slope and the inter-dune lowland, respectively; (3) Fixed allometric patterns were observed in the above-ground parts of the two Haloxylon species, as the growth of canopy and basal stem was preferentially to plant height; (4) These allometric relationships were significantly affected by the terrain, and exhibited discrepancy between two species, they both invested less in plant height in windy habitats, such as the dune crest and western slope, but H. ammodendron growing on the western slope and H. persicum growing on the eastern slope invested more in basal diameter for strengthening mechanical support and resources acquisition, respectively. These results indicated that both studied species adopted an ecological strategy that allocating more resources to horizontal expansion rather than vertical growth, the terrain has an important influence on the allometric relationship of their above-ground parts, and the trade-off mechanism of main components investing was different for these two species due to habitat heterogeneity and ecological adaptability.
