Abstract. A simple reduction scheme using so-called reduced energies E red and reduced cross sections σ red allows the comparison of heavy-ion induced reaction cross sections for a broad range of masses of projectile and target and over a wide energy range. A global behavior has been found for strongly bound projectiles whereas much larger reduced cross sections have been observed for weakly bound and halo projectiles. It has been shown that this simple reduction scheme works also well for α-particle induced reactions on heavy target nuclei, but very recently significant deviations have been seen for α+ 33 S and α+ 23 Na. Motivated by these unexpected discrepancies, the present study analyses α-induced reaction cross sections for targets with masses A ≈ 20 − 50. The study shows that the experimental data for α-induced reactions on nuclei with A ≈ 20 − 50 deviate slightly from the global behavior of reduced cross sections. However, in general the deviations evolve smoothly towards lower masses. The only significant outliers are the recent data for 33 S and 23 Na which are far above the general systematics, and some very old data may indicate that 36 Ar and 40 Ar are below the general trend. As expected, also the doubly-magic 40 Ca nucleus lies slightly below the results for its neighboring nuclei. Overall, the experimental data are nicely reproduced by a statistical model calculation utilizing the simple α-nucleus potential by McFadden and Satchler. Simultaneously with the deviation of reduced cross sections σ red from the general behavior, the outliers 23 Na, 33 S, 36 Ar, and 40 Ar also show significant disagreement between experiment and statistical model calculation.PACS. 25.55.-e 3H-, 3He-, and 4He-induced reactions -24.10.Pa Thermal and statistical models

An extensive series of evaluations have been performed as part of an IAEA coordinated research project to study a set of nuclear reactions that produce the diagnostic gamma-ray emitting radionuclides 51 Cr, 99m Tc, 111 In, 123 I and 201 Tl. Recommended cross-section data in the form of excitation functions have been derived, along with quantifications of their uncertainties. These evaluations involved the compilation of all previously published values and newly measured experimental data, followed by critical assessments and selection of those experimental datasets and accompanying uncertainties judged to be fully valid and statistically consistent for model-independent least-squares fitting by means of Padé approximations. Integral yields as a function of the energy were also calculated on the basis of the recommended cross sections deduced from these various fits. All evaluated numerical results and their corresponding uncertainties are available online at www-nds.iaea.org/medical/gamma_emitters.html and also on the medical portal of the International Atomic Energy Agency/Nuclear Data Section (IAEA-NDS) www-nds.iaea.org/medportal/.

BackgroundRadioisotope 52g Mn is of special interest for multimodal imaging (PET/MRI) applications and the main production route is based on proton/deuteron beams on Chromium (natural/enriched) targets. Using state-of-art nuclear reaction codes (Talys, Empire and Fluka), we perform a comparative study with the alternative 52g Mn production with the reaction nat V(α,x) 52g Mn. ResultsThis production channel, novel in the context of medical applications, provides a good source of 52g Mn, where very high radionuclidic purity can be maintained up to 3 weeks. Since nat V consists already of 99.75% 51 V , there is no need of enriched target material and the corresponding high-cost implications. The production of the main long-lived contaminants, i:e: 53 Mn and 54 Mn, is considered with care and the integral yields of the reactions are compared with the alternative production routes. Specifically, the production of the 54 Mn contaminant, which could be the most dangerous for clinical applications, turns out to be lower when compared with the natural Chromium target. ConclusionsThis channel turns out competitive with respect to the other considered production routes. The study also reveals poor accuracy of the relevant cross-section data set and indicates that better data and theoretical descriptions are needed for a precise evaluation of nat V(α,x) 52g Mn.
