Altered Fatty Acid Oxidation in Lymphocyte Populations of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Abstract: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a disabling multisystem illness in which individuals are plagued with fatigue, inflammatory symptoms, cognitive dysfunction, and the hallmark symptom, post-exertional malaise. While the cause of this disease remains unknown, there is evidence of a potential infectious component that, along with patient symptoms and common onsets of the disease, implicates immune system dysfunction. To further our understanding of the state of ME/CFS lymphocytes, we… Show more

“…In the CNS, B2M can also negatively affect hippocampal neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity and has been linked to clinical depression (Lamers et al., 2016). While B2M dysregulation has not been previously identified in ME/CFS patients, this finding is consistent with dysfunctional adaptive immune cells in ME/CFS (Maya, 2023).…”

“…This protein controls the exchange of cholesteryl esters and triglycerides between HDL and low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and higher CETP would be expected to result in a less favorable LDL/HDL ratio, which is associated with heart disease [ 63 ]. Immune cells in ME/CFS patients have been observed to exhibit altered fatty acid oxidation, which could be related to differences in plasma fatty acid composition [ 64 ].…”

“…In summarizing what is known about biological abnormalities in both illnesses, we have cited both the "positive" studies that find an abnormality and the "negative" ones that do not. These (302).…”
