Altered Functional Connectivity in the Motor and Prefrontal Cortex for Children With Down's Syndrome: An fNIRS Study

Abstract: Children with Down's syndrome (DS) might exhibit disrupted brain functional connectivity in the motor and prefrontal cortex. To inspect the alterations in brain activation and functional connectivity for children with DS, the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) method was applied to examine the brain activation difference in the motor and prefrontal cortex between the DS and typically developing (TD) groups during a fine motor task. In addition, small-world analysis based on graph theory was also car… Show more

“…Compared with deoxy-Hb signals and total-Hb signals, oxy-Hb signals are a more sensitive indicator of changes associated with regional cerebral blood flow. Thus, oxy-Hb signals were selected as the research objects of this study [ 79 , 80 , 81 ].…”

“…In this study, graph theory analysis was conducted to further evaluate the functional connectivity of these 22 channels [ 23 , 69 , 70 , 73 ]. For complex brain networks, clustering coefficient, global efficiency, local efficiency, and small-world network measure, are often used in network topology characteristic analyses [ 65 , 80 , 84 ]. All these indicators were calculated by GRETNA on MATLAB [ 88 ].…”

“…The sampling rate was 10 Hz. The positions file of all channels was obtained with a three‐dimensional (3D) digitizer (Patriot; Polhemus), which was analyzed using NIRS_SPM to estimate the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) coordinates of the channels and the probability of associated brain regions in the Brodmann area (BA) atlas 13,20 . The details about channel location are shown in Table 2.…”

“…The FC value is obtained by calculating the correlation coefficient of the time series of blood oxygen level-dependent signals between a pair of brain regions. 9,10 FC studies based on rs-fNIRS have been used to explore changes in brain function in other diseases, [13][14][15][16] but have not yet been conducted with respect to IC/BPS.…”

“…The fNIRS is widely employed to investigate human cognition [ 31 33 ]. The frontal areas of the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex (PFC), are associated with cognition [ 34 36 ]. The PFC regions carry out executive functions including higher-order cognitive functions which are essential for planning and executing complex motor control actions [ 37 39 ].…”
