A one-step quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS)-based approach to extraction and cleanup in multiresidue pesticide analysis is presented for the first time. The experiment was designed to detect 23 sulfonylurea herbicides in a complex cereal matrix. The challenge was to choose the optimal conditions of one-step extraction and cleanup. Chitin, diatomaceous earth, and octadecyl were investigated as cleanup sorbents. Chitin, citrate buffer, and 1 % formic acid in acetonitrile yielded the best results. The effectiveness of sulfonylureas extraction was evaluated at three different spiking levels (0.005, 0.05, and 0.5 mg kg −1 ) in wheat, rye, and oat using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The one-step QuEChERS provided recoveries in the 70-120 % range for 23 sulfonylureas in all cereal matrices. Matrix effects were evaluated and were not significant for all herbicides, showing suppression or enhancement (between −19 and 13 %). Precision, calculated as relative standard deviation (RSD), was below 20 %. A linear dependence was observed in the range of 0.005-2.0 mg kg −1 , and the correlation coefficient was R 2 > 0.999. Expanded measurement uncertainty was estimated to be between 9 and 24 %, on average. The validated method was employed in analysis of 89 real grain samples.

Rapid analytical methodology has been developed for multi-residue determination of pesticides in soils using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with triple quadrupole analyzer. Soil samples were collected from Argentina in 12 representative agricultural areas, and 18 pesticides were selected on the basis of their use. Special attention was paid to minimize sample preparation, making easier the method application to routine analysis. Several extraction procedures were tested, performing a careful study on matrix effects. The method finally proposed (extraction with acetonitrile and subsequent 2-fold dilution with water without any clean-up step) was fully validated at 0.05 and 0.5 mg/kg on the basis on European SANCO 12571/2013 and 825/00 guidelines. The method applicability and robustness was demonstrated by analysis of quality control (QC) samples, consisting on eleven soils spiked at 0.5 mg/kg. These soil samples were collected from different experimental plots, and were very diverse in their physico-chemical characteristics. The methodology developed is of easy application, there is low consumption of solvents and reagents, and no clean-up is required despite the complexity of the soil matrix. In the near future, the method developed will be used to monitor the presence of pesticides in large agricultural areas of Argentina.

The analytical tool for analysis of pesticide residues in honey must still be improved. Therefore, a sensitive, selective, rapid, and reliable analytical method for the analysis of pesticide residue belonging to 29 different classes at very low concentration levels was developed. Over 130 insecticides were extracted from the honey matrix using different amounts of sample, concentrations of the extraction solvent, and cleanup sorbents. Acceptable extraction recoveries accounting for matrix effect were obtained using the cleanup sorbent combination chitosan/aluminum oxide/C8 (200/200/200 mg) and 1% FA in ACN. Determinations were made by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). For most compounds, the recoveries range from 70 to 120%, with relative standard deviations < 20%. Linear correlation coefficients (r2) were higher than 0.99 at concentration levels of 0.001-0.100 mg kg−1. A positive matrix effect was observed for up to 95% of organophosphates and 43% of pyrethroids and a negative effect for 37% of neonicotinoids. This work showed that the presented method is convenient and reliable for quick monitoring of insecticides in honey samples.
