Aluminium oxide in the optical spectrum of VY Canis Majoris

Abstract: We report the first identification of the optical bands of the B 2 Σ + -X 2 Σ + system of AlO in the red supergiant VY CMa. In addition to TiO, VO, ScO, and YO, which were recognized in the optical spectrum of the star long time ago, AlO is another refractory molecule which displays strong emission bands in this peculiar star. Simulating the bands of AlO, we derive a rotational temperature of the circumstellar gas of T rot = 700 K. By resolving individual rotational components of the bands, we derive the kinem… Show more

“…Our results on gas-phase TiO/TiO 2 indicate that titanium remains in atomic form and in TiO in the inner wind, with some TiO converted into TiO 2 by shock chemistry. Several transitions of molecular TiO and TiO 2 have been observed in the wind of the supergiant VY CMa (Kamiński et al 2013a;De Beck et al 2015), where the TiO 2 emission is extended and not always correlated with the dust continuum emission. These results point out that TiO 2 clusters and grains may not play an important role as condensation seeds.…”

“…Indeed, VY CMa displays optical TiO emission whose presence implies non-LTE effects, most likely related to the strong stellar radiation (cf. Kamiński et al 2013). Large scatter of points on a rotational temperature diagram and inability to constrain T rot are problems we have encountered for several other molecules observed in the SMA survey, including NaCl and SiS for which many lines (>15) are observed, all at higher S/N.…”

“…Similar narrow molecular emission lines in VY CMa have been attributed to the accelerating wind (e.g., Milam et al 2007). Following Tenenbaum & Ziurys (2009) and Kamiński et al (2013), to better localize the TiO emission region we use the semi-empirical windacceleration model in VY CMa constrained from multi-epoch observations of H 2 O masers (Richards et al 1998). This model assumes linear wind acceleration within 75-440 mas of the star and does not take the inhomogenities of the wind into account on these scales.…”
