Ambient ionization and miniature mass spectrometry system for chemical and biological analysis

Abstract: Ambien ionization and miniaturization of mass spectrometers are two fields in mass spectrometry that have advanced significantly in the last decade. The integration of the techniques developed in these two fields is leading to the development of complete miniature analytical systems that can be used for on-site or point-of-care analysis by non-expert users. In this review, we report the current status of development in ambient ionization and miniature mass spectrometers, with an emphasis on those techniques wi… Show more

“…The pursuit of the high throughput drug analysis has led to the coupling of ambient ionization methods to field-portable MS instrumentation [39,40], allowing rapid and flexible screening of controlled substances and other contraband while enjoying the discriminating power of MS analysis. Reported applications demonstrate the utility of specific ambient MS techniques in this arena, allowing the direct analysis of utilized surface swabs [24], trace residues [41], bulk evidence [42], and highly complex sample matrices [26,43].…”

“…The objective is to translate the reactive methodology demonstrated with a commercial benchtop system, to a portable MS platform. Recent reports that couple ambient ionization methods, including PS, with portable mass spectrometers are promising 65 66 67 68 69 . In this respect, portable ion trap technology is often preferred as tandem analysis can be performed in time, without increase in instrument footprint.…”

“…In order to take advantage of advances in portable mass spectrometers, a necessary condition is the ability to sample and ionize neutral analytes with minimal sample preparation as well as simple high‐voltage supply apparatus. Here, we present the first application of the recently developed TENG MS ion source to pharmaceutical forensics using a dry wooden toothpick to sustain electrospray ionization (ESI) .…”
