Ampelographic and molecular characterisation of grapevine varieties in the gene bank of the experimental vineyard ‘Radmilovac’ – Serbia

Abstract: Characterisations of thirty grapevine varieties (Vitis vinifera L.) from the experimental vineyard ‘Radmilovac’ were conducted using a large number of OIV descriptors and eight highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. The ampelographic description contained 45 features. Molecular characterisation of selected microsatellite loci was performed using capillary electrophoresis fragment analysis. Dendrograms based on ampelographic and genetic data resulted in three groups of varieties. Qualitative ampelographic char… Show more

“…High diversity was found at a morphological level, as only 6 out of 74 ampelographic and ampelometric parameters studied were homogeneous for all varieties. This high morphological diversity has also been reported in other collections (Lamine et al, 2014;Zinelabidine et al, 2014;Khalil et al, 2017;Abiri et al, 2020;Milisǐćet al, 2021). The variation explained by the first three axes of the PCA using ampelographic, ampelometric, and leaf disc test data was low and similar to that obtained by Merkouropoulos et al (2015) in an ampelographic study in a Greek grapevine collection.…”

“…The term “bojadiser” means teinturier in Serbian, and “Župski Teinturier” is used as a synonym of ‘Župski Bojadiser’. Thus, ‘Tinturier Youpski’ is very likely a synonym of ‘Župski Bojadiser’, a teinturier variety bred in 1979 at the University of Belgrade ( Milišić et al., 2021 ). However, the sample “ Unknown SRB #03 ” does not correspond to a specimen of ‘Župski Bojadiser’, since it does not have red-fleshed berries.…”

“…After this crisis, devastated vineyards were replanted with grafted vines ( Garić Petrović, 2020 ), commonly replacing local varieties by foreign varieties to accommodate to international market trends. Today, the Serbian wine industry still relies on the cultivation of a reduced number of international varieties, like ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, ‘Merlot’, ‘Chardonnay’, and ‘Sauvignon Blanc’, and autochthonous varieties like ‘Prokupac’ represent a minor fraction of the Serbian vineyard ( Milišić et al., 2021 ). Nevertheless, there is a raising interest in the identification and promotion of the cultivation of indigenous and regional varieties like ‘Smederevka’ (syn.…”
