An Adaptive Low-cost Approach to Display Different Scenes to Multi-users for the Light Field Display

Abstract: As a promising alternative to VR head-mounted displays, current autostereoscopic displays and light field displays require high GPU consumption for multiple-view rendering and do not display different scenes for multiple viewers with motion parallax. Building upon prior work demonstrating how GPU utilization can be reduced by only rendering visible views, we propose an innovative approach to only render the visible views of different scenes towards multiple viewers' eyes. Moreover, we found that the number of … Show more

“…A rendering-pressurerelief algorithm has been proposed to turn off the unneces-sary views by tracking the viewer's position [34]. Another prior work has further exploited this algorithm to allow for multi-content rendering for multiple observers by tracking multiple pairs of pupils using a webcam, which however left the potential issues of viewing-zone overlapping and even viewing-zone confusion when two observers move close or switch positions [35].…”

“…Their seamless motion parallax comes from rendering a large number of stereoviews at the same time, which results in considerable waste of these invisible views. Meanwhile, technically, the views of an LFD are independent of each other [29]. But the current LFDs render the same 3D contents on each of the views.…”

“…Due to the special characteristic of the LFDs, the content rendered on the display can be different in view angles [29]. So is to say, multiple users can see customized images or videos on one LFD based on their positions.…”
