An air flow sensor for neonatal mechanical ventilation applications based on a novel fiber-optic sensing technique

Abstract: In this work, a simple and low-cost air flow sensor, based on a novel fiber-optic sensing technique has been developed for monitoring air flows rates supplied by a neonatal ventilator to support infants in intensive care units. The device is based on a fiber optic sensing technique allowing (a) the immunity to light intensity variations independent by measurand and (b) the reduction of typical shortcomings affecting all biomedical fields (electromagnetic interference and patient electrical safety). The sensing… Show more

“…Among others, intensity-based FOSs, and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been investigated [62,63,64,65,66,67]. Intensity-based FOSs have been proposed for breathing pattern monitoring [62,68,69,70]. The working principle of the flowmeters proposed in these articles is based on the changes of coupled light power with a fiber bending caused by the inhaled or exhaled airflow.…”

“…Continued research related to biomedical measurements has emerged many novel ideas of airflow sensors. The fiber-optic-based flow sensor proposed by Battista et al [12] was directed to neonatal ventilators; it is based on inserting an optical emitting fiber in the tip of a flexible cantilever. An array of photodiodes is placed to face the fiber-optical tip to sense the illumination pattern which varies with the position of the end tip of the cantilever.…”

“…Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the results for the plasma signal induced by laser irradiation according to the information of the surrounding gas flow, which affects the flow characteristics. Examples of existing methods for obtaining gas flow characteristics include in-pipe flow measurement methods, using a Pitot tube, gas sensors [20,21], ultrasonic flow meters [22], optical fiber cantilevers [23,24], and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy [25]. However, these methods may be difficult to apply in the absence of controlled environmental conditions, and depending on specific objects, the scale, and interference from other analysis methods.…”
