This thesis proposes a novel consumer-oriented Incoming Call Connection (ICC) service as an important enabling infrastructural component of the recently proposed ubiquitous consumer wireless world (UCWW), a new Consumer-centric Business Model (CBM) environment for wireless communications. The ICC solution proposed here will be offered by third-party providers who are autonomous of the access network providers. Compared to the present ICC service in the legacy subscriber-based networks, the consumeroriented ICC service will offer to mobile users greater flexibility and management control over incoming calls, enable users to receive incoming calls via multiple access networks/providers by means of a single identity, support user-driven, seamless, network-transparent Hot Access network Change (HAC), largely eliminate roaming charges and develop a new wireless networking business opportunity among other ben- Furthermore, the thesis elaborates a generic CBM-ICC service scenario, which shows how the CBM-ICC service offers to mobile users greater freedom and operation control over incoming calls, enables the novel attribute of users being empowered to receive incoming calls simultaneously, and otherwise, from various homogeneous and heterogeneous access networks, owned by the same or different providers, and enables user-driven HAC on active calls in keeping with, or matched to, user's Always Best Connected and Best Served (ABC&S) policies. A CBM-ICC proof-of-concept system-level testbed is implemented to perform experimental tests, probe different communications scenarios, evaluate the service performance, and further elaborate the service architecture. In this, approaches towards evaluating the performance of the CBM-ICC service based on designed testbed are elaborated, and sample numerical results are presented and analyzed. Abstract-Two transmission modes were standardized in UMTS: a Circuit Switched (CS) and a Packet Switched (PS) mode. In both cases, an efficient transmission framework was defined to allow the transmission of multimedia information with the required reliability, in spite of the medium characteristics. Multimedia calls are delivered in several transport channels -one for each media related to the call -properly multiplexed in one or more physical channels. These transport channels are designed to attain the required levels of QoS using two main techniques: Channel Coding and Rate Matching. In this paper we discuss the creation of transport channels for voice calls in both CS and PS modes and present a new methodology to optimize the Rate Matching parameters for a given channel coder and a set of QoS objectives. With the proposed methodology the maximum E b/N0 assigned to the transport channels is minimized, thus reducing the transmitted power.

Despite the continuous growth of data services, telephony is still the main source of revenue for the third generation mobile systems operators, particularly in the case of UMTS systems already deployed in the world [1]. Considering the increasing utilization of VoIP (Voice over IP), it is important to adequate the UMTS systems to this technology, in order to maximize the efficiency of transmission over the air interface. This paper considers a new contribution in this direction, based on the reduction of VoIP packet overhead, aiming to lower power consumption during a typical conversation. It is well known the advantages of HSPA systems for VoIP transmission, but at this moment there are only a few networks commercialy available using this technology.
