An Altered Microbiota in the Lower and Upper Female Reproductive Tract of Women with Recurrent Spontaneous Abortion

Abstract: As an obstacle to pregnancy, recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) can be caused by a variety of factors, and a current understanding of the etiology of RSA is still lacking; half of cases have an unknown cause. A substantial fraction of patients show no improvement after treatment.

“…68 These results are in line with another study in which beta diversity was significantly higher in the recurrent miscarriage group than in the control group in the vaginal microbiota, cervical microbiota, and microbiota from uterine lavage fluid. 69 Further, the comparison between women with spontaneous abortion and women undergoing voluntary abortion showed a double phenomenon with the spontaneous abortion group: a reduction in the diversity of the rectal microbiota and an increased ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes, which may suggest that the inflammatory aspects of the rectal microbiome in women experiencing miscarriage could be more attributable to the general dysbiosis than to the presence of a specific pathogen. 70…”

“…Changes in the composition of the vaginal microbiota are associated with RSA. 81,82 The female vagina is colonized by numerous species and quantities of microbial communities that work together to maintain a healthy vaginal microenvironment. Vaginal microbiota possesses three key characteristics: stability (the ability to remain stable under various conditions), resistance (the ability of the microbial community to withstand environmental changes), and resilience (the ability of the microbial community to recover after external environmental influences).…”
