An alternate wind power integration mechanism: Coal plants with flexible amine-based CCS

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis paper explores a solution to problems associated with two promising technologies for decarbonizing the electricity generation system: high costs of energy penalty of carbon capture and storage, and the intermittency and non-dispatchability of wind power. It looks at the optimal design and operating strategy of a hybrid system consisting of a coal plant retrofitted with a post-combustion amine-based Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) system equipped with the option to perform partial CO 2 captur… Show more

“…Thermal power plants with CCS can take on the essential role of providing dispatchable low carbon capacity, crucial in balancing an energy system with high penetration of intermittent renewables [4,5,6,7,8,9,3,10]. Thus, exible operation of both thermal power plants and CO 2 capture plants will be necessary to coordinate the balance between electricity demand and CO 2 emissions reduction targets [11,12,13,14,15,16].…”

“…Carbon dioxide is generally considered as one of the main reasons for climatic variation . Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is regarded as a powerful technological solution for reducing global CO 2 emissions, which includes the three sub‐systems of CO 2 capture: transportation, utilization, and storage.…”
