This research focused on investigating the expressive speech acts found in “Avatar: The Way of The Water” Movie. The research implied the theory of Searle and Vanderveken (1985). In collecting the data, the method is observation, and the technique is note-taking. In analyzing the data, the data were examined using the pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence-in-equalizing technique. The data was taken from the utterances in the Avatar movie. There are 46 expressive speech acts found in the movie which are divided into 10 acts. The expressive speech acts with most occurrences were complaint with 11 occurrences, followed by 8 data of greet, 7 data of apologize, 5 data of compliment, 5 data of protest, 3 data of lament, 3 data of thank, 2 data of boast, 1 data of praise, and 1 data of deplore. The expressive speech acts condole and congratulate were not found in the movie, because the death mostly was found in the war and the victory achieved was an obligation that they had to do.

This study focuses on analyzing the expressive speech act used as conversational strategy in Ellen’s Talk Show. The strategies used are direct speech and indirect speech. The purpose of this study is to classify and to investigate the language functions of expressive speech as conversational strategy occurred in Ellen talk show entitled “Ellen Taught this Fan How to Speak English.” This study uses a qualitative method with descriptive approach in analyzing data. This study applied the theory from Searle and Vanderveken (1985) related to the type of expressive speech act. The data source is taken from a conversation between Diana Aquino as their guest and Ellen as the host. This study is a document or content analysis because the data used is from the internet and was previously posted. The technique of data analysis which the researcher used is the interactive model of Miles and Huberman for data analysis, which consisted of three steps, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The data instrument used is utterances found in Ellen talk show. The results found 8 types of expressive language occurred involves greeting, thanking, complimenting, praising, apologizing, protesting, boasting, and complaining. The goal of this research is to describe different types of expressive speaking acts in “Free Guy” movie. It is a part of the descriptive qualitative methodology. The observational approach and non-participatory technique were used in this study's data collection. As a method and approach for data analysis, the referential identity method and pragmatic competence-in-equalizing technique were used. This study employed the (Searle, 1969) theory of expressive acts. The study's findings indicate that “Free Guy” movie has three different types of expressive speech acts.
