Platelet transfusion is used to prevent bleeding in patients with thrombocytopenia or platelet dysfunction. Purpose of investigating demographic characteristics of eligible volunteers as platelet donors and of demonstrating the association of platelet counts with blood groups as well as other factors. We used data of individuals who referred to a blood center in our hospital. Age, body weight, body mass index (BMI), and gender were determined, and than hemogram values such as leukocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelet and ABO blood types of those individuals were identified. A statistically significant difference determined for height, body weight, and BMI in both genders. Although BMI was lower in the group of platelet count ≤ 250, it was higher in a group of platelet count > 250. Furthermore, platelet count was more moderate in blood group O Rh-positive but, no significant difference was group O Rh-negative. Platelet count was higher in other Rh-positive blood groups than Rh negatives. BMI is vital in apheresis donors, and individuals with higher BMI values may prefer in case of double dose or more apheresis need. The determination of platelet counts in Rh positives is more elevated than Rh negatives.

Background: Obesity predisposing factors have been raised as a major concern of researchers due to the consequences of obesity on health such as diabetes, hypertension, and depression, ABO blood groups linked to many diseases, so may affect directly or indirectly on the incidence of obesity. Objectives:The study aims to find out the association of ABO blood groups with body mass index. Method:A cross-sectional study was conducted with a non-probability purposive sample of 2604 young adulthood age (18-25 years) that does not have previous surgery or chronic diseases through an electronic questionnaire in Iraq. A statistical package for social science (SPSS) program, version 24 was used for descriptive and inferential statistics.Results: Blood group O was a common frequency in people with increased body mass index, so high statistically significant association recorded (p ≤ 0.001). In addition, most of the subject (86.6%) have positive rhesus (Rh +). Conclusions:People with blood group O and positive RH were most vulnerable to increase their body mass index.

Introduction:Decreased physical activity is an important risk factor for obesity. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) has been developed to determine physical activity levels. Previous studies showed that obesity is affected by ABO blood types. Aim of the study was to search whether blood groups are associated with the level of physical activity. If proven, this will indicate that the blood groups may be one of the genetic factors that influence inclination towards obesity. Material and Methods:The study included 306 (n=211 obese, n=95 nonobese) female between the ages of 18 and 65 years. Body weights, BMI (body mass index) fat percentage, fat mass and fat-free mass were determined by using bio-impedance device. The short (IPAQ-S) and long form of (IPAQ-L) questionnaire was implemented through personal interview. ABO and Rh blood groups were determined via Microplack method.Results: No significant difference for IPAQ-S (vigorous, moderate, walking, sitting time, total physical activity) between obese and nonobese groups. However, the activity level of nonobese group was detected higher than obese group. According to IPAQ-L only significant difference in house yard-work detected higher in the obese group. There was no significant result obtained in evaluation of IPAQ-S and IPAQ-L by ABO blood groups in obese and nonobese group. There was no significant outcome detected in Rh factor and IPAQ-S in obese and nonobese group; however, a significant outcome was detected in IPAQ-L. Conclusion:Lack of significant findings in obese and nonobese groups in terms of physical activity levels according to IPAQ-S and IPAQ-L in the study reminds that obesity cannot be explained by physical activity alone. We could not detect a significant association between ABO blood groups and physical activity. Furthermore, the present study indicated that explaining obesity and physical activity in association with a single factor is difficult. ÖzetAmaç: Fiziksel aktivite azalmasının obezitede önemli bir risk faktörü olduğu bilinmektedir. Uluslararası Fiziksel Aktivite Anketi (IPAQ) fiziksel aktivite düzeylerini belirlemek amacıyla geliştirilmiştir. Obezitenin kan gruplarından etkilendiği daha önceden yapılan çalışmalarda gösterilmiş olup, bu çalışmamızda amacımız kan gruplarının fiziksel aktiviteyi etkileyip etkilemediğini araştırmaktır. Kanıtlanırsa eğer, kan gruplarının obeziteye eğilimi etkileyen genetik faktörlerden biri olabileceğini düşünmek mümkün olabilir.
