An annotated checklist of the planthoppers of Iran (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha, Fulgoromorpha) with distribution data

Abstract: A list of Hemiptera Fulgoromorpha (planthoppers) of Iran is provided, based primarily on literature records from 1902 to the present. In total 15 families and 235 species are recorded, with taxonomic details. Distribution data in Iran are given. Iranissus ephedrinus Dlabola, 1980 is transferred from Issidae to Nogodinidae. To resolve nomenclatural difficulty the following new combinations in Issidae are given: Iranodus dumetorus (Dlabola, 1981), Iranodus khatunus (Dlabola, 1981) and Iranodus repandus (Dlabola,… Show more

“…The records of the endemic planthoppers of Iran belong to recent 110 years (Mozaffarian and Wilson 2011). The nature of Iran, like any other land, has been exposed to various changes during this long period by events, such as agriculture, war, fire in woods and forests, overgrazing, urbanization and so on.…”

“…A total of 235 species of Fulgoromorpha have been recorded from Iran since 1902 (Mozaffarian and Wilson 2011), 117 of which from 13 families have never been recorded from other parts of the world and are restricted to the borders of Iran according to our knowledge. The high endemism (nearly 50%) in the recorded fauna of Iran shows a high potential of speciation inside Iran.…”

“…Among 712 faba bean samples of plants showing yellowing, stunting and necrosis, and collected from central and northern provinces of Iran, only 24 samples (3.4%) from the province Isfahan in central Iran were found to be infected with CpCDV. This might be related to the higher humidity in northern Iran that is not suitable for CpCDV vectors, which are mainly distributed in central and southern Iran (Mozaffarian & Wilson, ). In contrast, the climatic conditions of northern Iran, mainly under cultivation of faba bean, are favourable for aphids transmitting viruses such as FBNYV, BLRV, bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) and beet western yellows virus (BWYV), which previously have been reported infecting faba bean plants in northern Iran (Kaiser et al , ; Asghari et al , ).…”
