Abstract:The first commercial aquaponics companies are starting up in Europe. The main focus has been on solving technology issues and optimizing production. However, increasing attention is now being paid to certification and regulations linked to aquaponics, as well as the marketing of products and services. The paper presents the results of a study whose main aim was to estimate consumers' knowledge about aquaponics and their acceptance of aquaponics products in different European regions. An on-line questionnaire was administered to the general public through the aquaponics network of Food and Agriculture COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action FA1305 "The EU Aquaponics Hub-Realising Sustainable Integrated Fish and Vegetable Production for the EU" in 16 European countries. The methodology includes univariate and multivariate statistical techniques. The results show that, on average, attitudes towards aquaponics were positive, showing no significant differences between those who already knew about aquaponics and those who only heard about it through the survey. More than 50% of respondents had never heard of aquaponics, whilst more than 70% had already heard of hydroponics. No more than 17% of respondents were willing to pay more for aquaponically produced products and no more than 40% more when compared to the price of products from conventional farming. The results confirm three different clusters of potential consumers of aquaponics products. They also suggest an urgent need for implementing integrated and holistic approaches involving all stakeholders in aquaponics, in order to define a marketing plan and efficient communication strategies. This COST action, other projects and public decision makers must invest in educating consumers about aquaponics through the organization of guided tours, thematic workshops and tastings of aquaponics products in order to raise their awareness about this new technology. It is absolutely urgent that public decision makers, in cooperation with aquaponics stakeholders, address the main institutional constraints, namely the introduction of aquaponics as an economic activity and the organic certification of aquaponics products.

R E S U M OA situação económica das explorações leiteiras dos Açores está a atravessar dificuldades devido à liberalização da produção de leite na Europa. A pecuária açoriana necessita de se preparar para esta mudança sendo prioritário o melhor conhecimento dos fatores que influenciam a produtividade e/ou rentabilidade agrícola. Este trabalho apresenta um modelo de regressão linear múltipla que relaciona o rendimento das explorações com as características técnico-econó-micas, produtivas e morfológicas de 91 explorações de São Miguel, com dados de 2010.Verificou-se que existe uma forte correlação e um efeito significativo entre a produção de leite aos 305 dias e a pontuação final resultante das classificações parciais de carateres descritivos primários das primíparas (r=0,748). O mesmo se passa na produção de gordura (r=0,673) e proteína (r=0,731), em igual período. O modelo de regressão linear múltipla, com R 2 =0,736, estabelece que a venda de leite, os custos (alimentação, salários, rendas) e as cabeças normais, todos por unidade de superfície, têm efeito significativo no rendimento do empresário e família por hectare das explorações leiteiras. Conclui-se ser necessário melhorar a qualidade morfológica das vacas leiteiras, para aumentar a produção de leite, proteína e gordura, permitindo um aumento da venda de leite por hectare. A B S T R A C TThe economic situation of Azores dairy farms is experiencing difficulties due to the liberalization of milk production in Europe. The Azorean cattle raising has to adjust to this changes and the enhancement of knowledge regarding productivity and profitability factors seems to be the priority. This paper presents a multiple linear regression model which relates farm incomes to the technical-economic, productive and morphological, in 2010, of 91 farms of the island of San Miguel.Based on the developed procedure, a strong correlation was observed and a significant effect milk production between 305 days and the final score resulting from the partial primary descriptive classifications of characters of primiparas (r=0.748). The same is true in the production of fat (r=0.673) and protein (r=0.731) in the same period. The multiple linear regression model with a R 2 = 0,736 shows that milk sales, feeding, salary and rent expenses, and animal density, all by area unity, have a significant effect in dairy farms profitability. The conclusions pointed that for an increase of milk sales per hectare it is necessary to improve the morphological quality of dairy cows, to enhance milk production, protein and fat.

Assessment and Optimization of Energy Consumption in Dairy Farm: Energy Efficiency

Abstract:Energy is considered as an important production factor in many systems and therefore should be managed in parallel with other main production resources including land, labor and capital. In this paper, the energy efficiency scores of some selected dairy farms, using the non-parametric data envelopment analysis approach was assessed. The results for efficient farmers based on two DEA models showed that with an energy conservation policy, farmers can perform better in stock farming. The total energy consumption was 72.8 GJ/cow and the top two energy consuming inputs as feed intake and electricity drew the fact that promoting input utilization efficiency seems critical. The mean technical efficiency score of 0.88 made this ample need more apparent. Machinery, electricity and feed were suggested as the main inputs for optimization due to their high contribution in energy saving (46 and 36%, respectively). The least amount of ESTR (Energy Saving Target Ratio) for human labor indicated that it is employed efficiently. By practicing efficiently, dairy farmers are potentially capable of reducing their energy consumption by 16.8%. In this study, adopting new methodologies, cutting the excess use of inputs such as feed stuffs through using standard feeding rations and providing consultancy and extension programs are recommended.
