An application of simulation to analyse resource sharing among health‐care organisations

Abstract: In the field of inventory management, it is a well‐known fact that centralisation, by sharing the risk between several entities, helps reduce the inventory required to provide a certain level of service. In practice, centralisation can be difficult to accomplish, because improvements to the system’s general performance may be achieved at the expense of some of the entities involved. This paper describes a simulation‐based methodology used to study the impacts of equipment pooling on a group of local community … Show more

“…Such a pooling of resources is a well-known operations management technique to improve system performance in the face of variable demand across facilities. For example, Pasin et al [6] used simulation to demonstrate that pooling of equipment across community healthcare service centers would reduce unit costs while maintaining current service levels. As the initial step in the research described here, faculty from the University of Calgary were invited to help evaluate designs for new facilities.…”

“…While some existing research has emphasized the benefits of health care resource pooling in low-resource settings (Karsten, Slikker, & van Houtum, 2015; Pasin, Jobin, & Cordeau, 2002), applied examples of such sharing remain sparse and generally focus on macro-scale, cross-border care arrangements between public health systems (Galan, Olsavszky, & Vlădescu, 2013; Glinos & Baeten, 2014). These cross-border care examples lack consideration of the competitive nature of private health care.…”
