An Approach to Detecting Cyber Attacks against Smart Power Grids Based on the Analysis of Network Traffic Self-Similarity

Abstract: The paper discusses an approach for detecting cyber attacks against smart power supply networks, based on identifying anomalies in network traffic by assessing its self-similarity property. Methods for identifying long-term dependence in fractal Brownian motion and real network traffic of smart grid systems are considered. It is shown that the traffic of a telecommunication network is a self-similar structure, and its behavior is close to fractal Brownian motion. Fractal analysis and mathematical statistics ar… Show more

“…The network signals including the normal signal and anomaly signal are collected in an array type, and they are stored as a DB ( Figure 3 ). It is collected from each user which is proceeded by ADM [ 13 ]. M is a mean, E is an exponent, e is an Euler number and A is an array.…”

“…In this case, the mechanism, which is under development, should take into account the randomness of flows transmitted in modern technological data transmission networks and their features, among which the main ones are significant nonstationarity and pulsations with long-term dependencies, explained by the existence of self-similarity (fractality) in the data flow [9][10][11][12].…”

“…This fully applies to information systems in the energy sector, built according to the Smart Grid (SG) concept. In accordance with this concept, the priority areas for the development of DTN in the energy sector for the coming years include [ 6 ]: widespread introduction at new and upgraded measurement points of intelligent measuring instruments—“smart” meters with the function of remote control of the load profile of the measured line and measuring transducers with standard communication interfaces and protocols that comply with information security standards; installation at each large facility connected to the power grid, advanced automated information-measuring systems operating in real-time; creation of a wide network of integrated communications based on various communication lines; implementation of automated production management systems in energy companies. …”
